A message from Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital’s President and CEO, Julia Hanigsberg

Welcome! I’m Julia Hanigsberg and I am the President and CEO of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.

Holland Bloorview is excited to offer Autism Insights: Research Innovations, Strategies and the Lived Experience, a virtual summit designed for parents, caregivers, health professionals and other service providers interested in autism.

There has certainly been no shortage of creative and innovative thinking at Holland Bloorview during this pandemic. This summit, a collaboration amongst our clinical staff, parent advisors, parent advocates, autistic self-advocates and researchers from the Autism Research Centre is a wonderful example of this.

As an attendee, you can look forward to hearing about the latest on autism client-and family-focused research led by world-class researchers at Holland Bloorview. You’ll also learn helpful strategies and ways in which our communities can better support children and youth on the autism spectrum and their families.

I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the speakers in this summit, who took the time from their busy schedules to appear on video (no easy feat!) to share their knowledge, strategies and personal narratives in the hopes that you will feel supported and more confident in your parenting and/or clinical abilities during this challenging period.

Have a wonderful summit!

A message from your host, Moira Peña

Welcome! I’m Moira, an Occupational Therapist and the Autism Programs Lead at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto, Ontario. I consider myself very lucky to work and collaborate with amazing autism researchers, health care professionals, parents and autistic self-advocates in my day-to-day and am thrilled to be able to share their wisdom with you during Holland Bloorview’s Autism Summit.

Over the years, I have learned so much from each of our speakers and I know that you will too. As a moderator, my goal is to ask questions that any parent, caregiver and/or service provider supporting a child or youth on the autism spectrum might have. I also want to dig deep with our speakers and make sure all concepts are clear and actionable for our audience, keeping in mind our understanding of autism continues to evolve.

I am excited for you to join me to learn new ways of thinking about autism, be witness to authenticity and vulnerability as well as laugh (and sometimes tear up) together as we move forward as a supportive, inclusive and united autism community. Enjoy!
